The Murse at Work

An often overlooked element of a man’s work wardrobe is his work bag. Formal, functional and, yet, fashionable bags for men are out there and waiting for you to complete your outfit with them.

Says Greg Unis, vice president of men’s merchandising for Coach, “I sometimes see men carrying bags that look old and worn out–that sends a message that you’re not so put together and that you don’t pay attention to detail.”

What you want are a couple of options: a more casual messenger-style bag for an everyday kind of use, and a more formal briefcase-style tote, preferably in leather, for business meeting days. Both should be sizable and sturdy enough to carry your laptop and notes, but each style can be quite distinct from fabric to color. The brighter the color of your work bag, the more casual it makes your overall look. More versatile colors are gray and burnished brown, while black works well with many professional looks.

Messenger-style bags with a strap that runs across the body work well for everyday leaving your hands free to carry your coffee and cell, but also distribute the weight of the bag evenly and ergonomically to avoid back and shoulder pain. The more classic briefcase-shape with a cleanly-designed handle is obviously the better choice to go with your 3-piece suit so as to not crease and crumple your fabulous fashion choice.
