An often overlooked element of a man’s work wardrobe is his work bag. Formal, functional and, yet, fashionable bags for men are out there and waiting for you to complete your outfit with them.

Says Greg Unis, vice president of men’s merchandising for Coach, “I sometimes see men carrying bags that look old and worn out–that sends a message that you’re not so put together and that you don’t pay attention to detail.”

What you want are a couple of options: a more casual messenger-style bag for an everyday kind of use, and a more formal briefcase-style tote, preferably in leather, for business meeting days. Both should be sizable and sturdy enough to carry your laptop and notes, but each style can be quite distinct from fabric to color. The brighter the color of your work bag, the more casual it makes your overall look. More versatile colors are gray and burnished brown, while black works well with many professional looks.

Messenger-style bags with a strap that runs across the body work well for everyday leaving your hands free to carry your coffee and cell, but also distribute the weight of the bag evenly and ergonomically to avoid back and shoulder pain. The more classic briefcase-shape with a cleanly-designed handle is obviously the better choice to go with your 3-piece suit so as to not crease and crumple your fabulous fashion choice.

Go for Broke | T. Anthony’s Alligator Calf Collection

|By EDWARD BARSAMIAN| January 21, 2011, 6:45 pm T. Anthony alligator calf duffel, $895, wheeled one-suiter, $1,900, and packing case, $2,200. Go to tanthony.com.Since 1946, T. Anthony has provided the upper crust with an alternative to its French rivals with equal parts luxury and versatility. That isn’t to say that the old guard doesn’t have a fondness for the finer things — at a price, of course. T. Anthony’s latest luggage pieces, the alligator calf collection, blends the other half’s need for long-lasting quality luggage (the leather is from a tannery in Italy) with rich yet tastefully understated style. Embossed to mimic alligator hides in a deep chocolate, the prices — ranging from $895 for a classic duffel to $2,200 for a 31-inch wheeled packing case — won’t make you shed any crocodile tears. Think of the collection as a guaranteed first-class upgrade the next time you travel.

Ceci N’est Pas un Birkin

Women's Fashion|By EDWARD BARSAMIAN| January 3, 2011, 9:00 am
Spring is shaping up to be the season of the basic Parisian shopper. And of all the lo-fi carryalls about to hit stores, we’re partial to the Together Bag from Thursday Friday, a screen-printed tote featuring a likeness of Hermès’s iconic Birkin bag. Roni Brunn and Olena Sholomytska, the duo behind Thursday Friday, were looking to create a bag that could be used for everything, including the groceries, when inspiration hit. “We realized that we were using an extra bag to supplement our ‘real’ bags,” Sholomytska says. “So we ended up with a surreal design that references luxury but is ultimately an anti-status status symbol.” And the Birkin references don’t stop there: in a fittingly bizarre twist, there is already a three-month waiting list.

The Together bag by Thursday Friday, $35. At thufri.com.
